New Zealand is a special place and has 3 main islands that make up most of the county. It has large tracts of unpopulated land which gives the people space to move and breathe. This is a small collection of images from the many trips and voyages I have taken around my country. Enjoy.

Milford Sound is the only sound (fjord) in Fiordland which you can drive to, this makes it a busy place. The visitors are greeted with spectacular sights with Mitre Peak central in the view and options to cruise on the 15km long sound. The sheer rock walls soar up to 1200m high straight out of the water. Milford’s rainfall averages around 7 metres per year.
The Milford road is one of the world’s great drives. From Te Anau to Milford Sound you drive literally through the heart of Fiordland. 120km of amazing scenery and is a destination in itself which should be taken slowly and often.
All of these images have been taken not far from the roads edge.
On the road edge
There is a good network of tracks, trails and routes to explore, either by one day or multi day adventures. Once you are above the bush line, a new world welcomes you. Fiordland’s mountains, ridges and open tops seem to go on forever.
The Fiordland Coast is a wild and remote place. One of my favorite places on Earth. It is only accessible by boat, helicopter or float plane and therefore you know you are in a true wilderness area. There are 14 fjords along the National Park coastline. On the maps they are called sounds but are actually ice carved fjords. As you travel north the fjords get steeper with the mountain tops falling straight into the sea. New Zealand’s first shipwreck, European house and boat were built in Dusky Sound.
My hometown of Te Anau is a small township located on the shore of NZ’s 2nd largest lake and the gateway to Fiordland. Lake Manapouri which I would rate an NZs nicest lake is very close and linked to Te Anau by the Waiau river. Both these Lakes dominate the area and are the boating access into the Fiordland wilderness.
These are the two local provinces and cover the lower South Island. My most traveled areas for photography and touring.
Situated at the very south of NZ, it is our 3rd largest island. It is mostly wilderness within the Rakiura National Park. A small population is the Oban township. It has its own special character being isolated from the rest of the country and the locals prefer it that way.
Running from Jacksons Bay in the South to Karamea in the north, the area is commonly just known as the ‘West Coast’. It has a deep history with mining and retains that rugged independent feeling.
